Magnesium Acetate MSDS Sheet Material Safety Data Sheet

1. Product Identification

Synonyms: Magnesium acetate tetrahydrate; magnesium diacetate; Magnesium acetate, 4-hydrate, powder; acetic acid, magnesium salt; Cromosan.
CAS No.: 142-72-3 (Anhydrous); 16674-78-5 (Tetrahydrate)
Molecular Weight: 214.4
Chemical Formula: (CH3COO)2Mg.4H2O

2. Composition/Information on Ingredients

Ingredient: Magnesium Acetate
CAS No.: 142-72-3
Percent: 98 - 100%

3. Hazards Identification

Caution! Magnesium Acetate may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air). The toxicological properties of this material have not been fully investigated.
Target Organs: None known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause eye irritation.
Skin: May cause skin irritation.
Ingestion: May cause irritation of the digestive tract. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated.
Chronic: No information found.

4. First Aid Measures

Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Ingestion: If large amounts were swallowed, give water to drink and get medical advice.
Skin Contact: Wash exposed area with soap and water. Get medical advice if irritation develops.
Eye Contact: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Fire: Magnesium Acetate is not considered to be a fire hazard.
Explosion: Not considered to be an explosion hazard.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Use any means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode.

6. Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment.
Spills/Leaks: Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

7. Handling and Storage

Keep Magnesium Acetate in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect against physical damage. Isolate from incompatible substances. Containers of Magnesium Acetate may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues (dust, solids); observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: None established.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document, Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent edition, for details.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator (NIOSH type N95 or better filters) may be worn. If oil particles (e.g. lubricants, cutting fluids, glycerin, etc.) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air-purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.

9. Physical and Chemical Properties

Appearance: Magnesium Acetate is white hygroscopic crystals.
Odor: Light smell of acetic acid.
Solubility: Soluble in water.
Specific Gravity: 1.45
pH: Aqueous solution is neutral or slightly acid.
% Volatiles by volume @ 21C (70F): 0
Boiling Point: No information found.
Melting Point: 80C (176F)

10. Stability and Reactivity

Stability: Magnesium Acetate is stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage. Very hygroscopic.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: May produce oxides of carbon and the contained metal.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
Incompatibilities: Strong oxidizers.
Conditions to Avoid: Moisture and incompatibles.
